How Image Compression Works
This tool uses the browser's built-in canvas API to re-encode images at a lower quality level. JPEG and WebP support lossy compression — they discard imperceptible visual data to reduce file size. PNG uses lossless compression; converting PNG to WebP usually gives much better results.
Which Format Should I Use?
- WebP: Best choice for web — 25–35% smaller than JPEG at same quality. Supported by all modern browsers.
- JPEG: Best for photos. Avoid for logos/text/screenshots (artifacts).
- PNG: Best for logos, icons, screenshots. Lossless — won't degrade. Larger files than WebP/JPEG for photos.
Tips to Reduce File Size
- Start at 72–80% quality — usually indistinguishable from original at 30–50% smaller size
- Convert photos to WebP for the best size/quality ratio
- Resize large images before compressing (combine with our Image Resizer)
- PNG screenshots/logos compress better as WebP than as JPEG (JPEG adds artifacts to text)
